Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs explained that the ministry will continue to monitor the trend of COVID-19 throughout the world, especially those that involve Brunei Darussalam citizens and residents who are studying at affected countries.
Following the current world situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak. This includes monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases at several countries, including countries where there are Brunei Darussalam overseas mission as well as Brunei Darussalam citizens and residents. The ten most affected countries are the People's Republic of China; Italy; United States; Spain; Germany; Islamic Republic of Iran; France; Switzerland; Republic of Korea; and United Kingdom. Out of the 10 countries, only the People's Republic of China recorded decrease in daily cases recently.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor the development of COVID-19 throughout the world. This is to ensure the safety, health and well-being of Brunei Darussalam citizens and residents overseas. According to information from Brunei Darussalam missions abroad, since the 19th of March, many Brunei Darussalam citizens and residents specifically students have returned to the country. As of yesterday, the number of Brunei Darussalam citizens and residents abroad who have registered with the ministry was 806 people. Meanwhile, the number of students abroad was one thousand 574; embassy officers and staff as well as their family was 550.
In light with the COVID-19 outbreak throughout the world, the ministry will continue to monitor the status of citizens and residents abroad. Brunei Darussalam missions overseas will focus on the needs and issues faced by the people. If the country does not have Brunei Darussalam consulate or embassies, the people can seek assistance at the nearest Brunei Darussalam missions.
