Brunei Darussalam welcomes the joint effort and initiative of members of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, AIPA. Yang Berhormat Dayang Nik Hafimi binti Abdul Haadii, Member of the Legislative Council as the representative of AIPA Meeting Chairman of the 4th AIPA Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs, AIPA-CODD stated this during the 3rd AIPACODD Meeting. Yang Berhormat also stressed problems and issues pre-COVID-19 especially prohibited drugs that affect the community continuously, should be discussed by members of the AIPA Parliament by finding solutions towards addressing challenges to stem the drug problems. This year's online meeting is hosted by the National Assembly of Viet Nam.
With the theme "Turning Words into Actions towards a Drug Free ASEAN Community" the meeting is a parliamentary platform for lawmakers to discuss the increasingly worrying drug abuse related problems in the ASEAN region. The meeting also discusses drug abuse prevention in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has changed the scope of drugs trafficking and related challenges.
The meeting also approved a resolution that focuses attention totally on AIPA member countries in addressing drug matters in the region. Among other things the resolution includes ensuring the effective implementation of ASEAN Work Plan on Securing Communities Against Illicit Drugs 2016-2025 in addressing the illicit drug activities, increasing awareness on the dangers of drugs, increasing studies on the effects of COVID-19 on the drugs market, misuse and drugs related crimes in order to provide the suitable response, increase regional and international bilateral cooperation.
This is done through information sharing, cross-border cooperation, technical assistance and increasing capabilities to tackle the regional drugs problem more effectively, especially during the post-COVID-19 period. The resolution also stressed the importance of the AIPACODD Meeting to strengthen cooperation with regional networks such as the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters, AMMD, and the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters, ASOD. Also in attendance were Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Judin bin Haji Asar, Secretary to the Cabinet Ministers Council and Clerk to the Legislative Council. Brunei Darussalam will host next year's AIPACODD Meeting.
